Things are heating up on The Ave and it’s not just the temperature. We’re heading toward two of our big summer events, with another one waiting in the wings. Last week’s column dealt with Cruise Down Memory Lane, coming up on June 10, so this week’s column is devoted to our fifth annual Running The Ave 5K, set for two weeks later.
This event, Cumberland County’s Premier Road Race, will take place, rain or shine, on Sunday, June 25, starting at 9 a.m., on the 600 block of Landis Avenue. Premier Orthopedic Associates of South Jersey once again sponsors the race.
We’re partnering again with Second Capital Running, a Vineland-based company, for this fully-sanctioned race, which will turn Vineland’s business district into a magnificent 5K course—including a run through beautiful Landis Park and past downtown landmarks like the Landis Theater, First Methodist Church, and City Hall. This race is on fully closed roads with police support. Detours will be posted.
The race has brought in as many 145 runners from throughout the area annually and we’re looking to exceed that number this year. As in the past, some of the most unique awards from any race in the region will be awarded, such as Vineland’s Fastest (first Vineland resident to cross the finish line) and the True Grit Award, given to the last person to cross the finish line “to celebrate the spirit of never giving up.”
Also we’ve added a new category awarding the fastest stroller and racing chair runners to continue the tradition of making this a family-friendly and inclusive event. We are honored this year to host Ainsley’s Angels of South Jersey, a national organization of runners that participate in local races while pushing those with disabilities in specially modified racing chairs.
Many runners over the years have commented on the exceptional quality and organization of this event as a “stand out” for them among races on their calendar; it is a can’t-miss race among our own community of local runners. Registration is $30 per runner. Just go to TheAve.biz and go to the event link. Proceeds will benefit Main Street Vineland’s efforts to help the continued revitalization of Vineland’s historic downtown. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.
As I’ve said in past years, if you’re running just one 5K this year, make it this one. This will be a great way for people to have fun, keep physically fit, and help promote our beautiful downtown—The Ave—while, at the same time, staying safe.
While you’re at the run, take advantage of our walking trails downtown. Just look for the “Walk The Ave” signs, which will direct you to our one- or two-mile trails or combine them and walk three miles.
I hope to see you at Cruise Down Memory Lane this weekend and at Running The Ave 5K two weeks later.
